Northwest Iowa Reading Association 2025 Writing Contest For K-6 Student

We invite all Northwest Iowa students grades K-6 to participate in the 2025 writing contest. Two contest divisions are available for entry, short story and poetry. We look forward to celebrating writing with students across Northwest Iowa!

Short Story Contest Guidelines:

  • Entries may be fiction or nonfiction
  • Short story entries may not exceed 500 words and text should be typed • All work must be original and from the current year
  • Students may conference with parents, teachers, and peers on their work

Poetry Contest Guidelines:

  • All poems must include a title
  • Poems must include 25-250 words
  • All work must be original and from the current year
  • Students may conference with parents, teachers, and peers on their work

How to Enter:

  • Student’s name, grade, and school must be included on the entry’s first page
  • Only one entry per contest category (short story/poetry)
  • Email entry submissions to the address listed for the appropriate grade. The email title will include: Contest Entered (Poetry or Short Story) and Name

Deadline for entry is April 1, 2025

Award Ceremony:

  • All winners will be notified via email by April 15, 2025
  • Award ceremony honoring Northwest lowa Reading Association contest winners will be held on Wednesday, May 7 at 7pm at the Western Iowa Tech Community College Campus in Sioux City, Iowa
