New Book Study Course Available

Posted: November 7, 2023

The Green Hills AEA has approved Course #216176 “Developing a Mistake-Welcoming Classroom Culture” for license renewal or graduate credit.  Our book study course is based on the text Risk. Fail. Rise. A Teacher’s Guide to Learning from Mistakes written by M. Colleen Cruz.  The author will be a keynote speaker at our June 25 & 26, 2024 state conference.

Synopsis:
Mistakes are not the problem. The problem is the shame we attach to mistakes and the inability to grow from them.  You have likely heard the adage, ‘Everyone makes mistakes.’ But what you might not have heard is that there are some predictable reasons why we make these mistakes. Knowing why we make mistakes can help us make fewer mistakes and ensure that when we do make mistakes they’ll be more of a useful variety. In Risk. Fail. Rise. teachers will learn how to address their own teaching mistakes, model with their own mistake-making, and improve their response to others’ mistakes. The author shares what research studies say about mistake-making as part of learning and what that means for teaching. She provides research, examples, and tools that help teachers destigmatize mistake-making so that they and their students can do the real work of growth.

Requirements:

  • Meet with a study group of two or more participants to answer the discussion questions and to share their learning.
  • Use one of the “Mistakes Lessons” in the text with their students and will write a reflection of their experience.
  • Keep a notebook or Google document of the learning and discussion from each chapter. Notes will be used to write a final reflection paper..
  • Independently read each chapter of the text prior to the study group meeting for the chapter.

First online class meeting (Zoom) will be November 13. It will be recorded, and a link shared.
