Sohyun Meacham is our Iowa Reading Administrator of the Year. This award is presented to professionals who have demonstrated their interest, concern, and leadership in promoting reading within their domain. Dr. Meacham is a member of the Eastern Iowa Reading Council and has served on the Iowa Reading Board of Directors as secretary, vice-president, and currently president-elect. As a professor at the University of Northern Iowa, she has the ability to shape many young minds.
Dr. Meacham currently serves as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa. Her leadership in the field of literacy is both deep and wide-reaching: she has not only contributed as a researcher and teacher educator in early literacy and culturally responsive pedagogy, but she has also consistently demonstrated bold leadership in promoting reading and literacy education across the university, professional organizations, and the wider community.
One of Dr. Meacham’s most recent and equally significant contribution has been her work in the lowa Reading Association. She has a deep commitment to the mission of literacy advocacy and bridging the divide of research and practice.
Dr. Meacham’s influence extends far beyond administrative functions. She models professionalism, warmth, and expertise in all her interactions, and she brings a research-informed and equity-driven approach to everything she does. She collaborates across K-12 schools and university programs to ensure that all learners-especially those from underrepresented or multilingual backgrounds-receive the high-quality literacy instruction they deserve. In every facet of her work, Dr. Meacham demonstrates a sincere and sustained commitment to promoting literacy, empowering educators, and advancing the field. She is the kind of administrator who not only uplifts others but also builds lasting infrastructure and partnerships that ensure the work continues long after the initial spark.
